虽然众所周知中枢性疲劳影响机体运动功能,Gant博士和同事指出,目前尚不清楚中枢性疲劳对机体其他器官和系统的影响,例如是否会影响机体眼球运动。 

研究人员招募了11名训练有素的自行车骑手,他们在实验中骑健身自行车的时间为3小时。一些参与者在运动过程中摄入2杯咖啡,而其余运动员饮用不含咖啡因的安慰剂。 

研究人员解释说,咖啡因可以间接促进某些神经递质的活动。既往研究表明,神经递质传递障碍可能是中枢性疲劳的问题所在。

参与者完成运动后,研究人员使用眼球追踪系统评估参与者的眼球运动。研究人员发现,剧烈运动的参与者神经递质传递失衡,使得参与者快速眼球运动减慢。但饮用咖啡的参与者的体内神经递质传递平衡恢复,眼球运动并未减慢,快速眼动速度加快,不饮用咖啡的参与者快速动眼速度并未加快,研究人员认为喝咖啡有助于减轻中枢性疲劳导致的视力问题。

研究人员认为这是第一项评估中枢性疲劳后眼球运动的相关研究。由于运动系统经常为机体使用,因此可能会导致民众眼球运动功能受损,中枢性疲劳可能在其中发挥着不可小视的作用。咖啡因能够拮抗这种效果,这表明中枢性疲劳可能破坏某一种或多种神经递质的传递。

研究人员正在进行一项研究以评估精神病药物是否可缓解剧烈运动后导致的中枢性疲劳。
