本研究将Fischer 大鼠注射SU5416和缺氧处理达三周,之后氧量维持正常。超过90%的大鼠在注射后6周内出现死亡,尸检显示胸腔积液、右心室肥大扩张、肝肿大和其他充血性心力衰竭的迹象。时间进程研究显示PAH大鼠出现肺动脉逐渐增厚,形成同心片状和丛状病变,以及右室纤维化。透射电镜显示肌丝、T管和肌浆网的破坏。另外,在Fischer 大鼠中发现了Sprague-Dawley大鼠没有的右室线粒体损伤。

研究结果显示,右室线粒体的损伤在肺动脉高压致死中扮演着重要角色。
