研究人员在碱性条件下水解血清酯化脂肪酸，酸化后提取血清TFAs。利用基质辅助激光解吸/电离-傅里叶变换离子回旋共振质谱(MALDI-FTICR MS)对8种脂肪酸的校准曲线，同时对1828份血清样本(包括543名对照组、655名糖尿病前期患者和630名T2D患者)中的14份血清TFAs进行了定量。

相关分析显示，与对照组和糖尿病前期患者相比，T2D患者的血清TFAs和TFAs比值在男性和女性中都有很强的相关性。接收者操作特征分析表明，包括空腹血糖，糖基化血红蛋白A1c型，γ-谷氨酰转移酶，甘油三酸酯，C18：1和C20：3的检测组具有良好的区分糖尿病和T2D的能力，灵敏度为87.0％， 特异性为91.0％，曲线下面积（AUC）为0.96。

在本研究中，使用MALDI-FTICR对血清TFAs进行快速、绝对、同时定量，MS. C18:1和C20:3与糖尿病前期和T2D显著相关。
