Moffitt研究人员开发了一种新颖的数学方法来分析抗生素耐药性从而克服了这一困难。他们显示大肠杆菌的耐药性可以促进或阻碍给定序列的抗生素。他们发现大约有70%不同序列的2到4种抗生素会导致最后的细菌耐药性。

“我们的研究结果表明,通过顺序性抗生素使用,我们也许能够引导一场“医药革命”使细菌耐药性不再出现。” Daniel Nichol说。

“我们的结果可以很容易地在实验室测试,如果立即验证就可以应用于临床试验,我们研究的化合物都是FDA批准和常用的。”医学博士Jacob G. Scott说。

研究人员解释说,他们的研究结果也可以帮助一个谨慎的医务工作者,粗心或随机的处方药物被开出可能会无意中导致抗生素耐药性。

“虽然我是肿瘤学家,抵抗抗生素的进化问题完全类似于癌症的靶向治疗,我们使用的数学模型可以应用于这两种情况。我们下一个共同的努力目标集中在靶向治疗肺癌以及同时验证对细菌的结果。”Jacob G. Scott说。
