这一由Peter O'Donnell Jr.脑研究所的科学家们做出的研究成果在动物水平证明了含有beta淀粉样蛋白的编码DNA的疫苗能够引发良好的免疫反应，而且该疫苗对于临床使用具有一定的安全性。

该研究的共同作者，来自西南医学中心阿兹海默症的主任Rosenberg博士称，此前的疫苗疗法都以失败告终，但这些严峻的事实并不妨碍最新这一研究的价值。他认为我们还需要寻找最佳的接种方式以确保其安全性。毕竟十年前的一项相似的疫苗疗法因为给药方式不当引发了严重的脑溢血症状，这值得慎重考虑。

Rosenberg博士认为可以尝试皮下注射代替肌肉注射。被接种的细胞能够合成beta淀粉样蛋白，而机体则会响应这些蛋白质而产生特异性的抗体。虽然该疫苗还没有在人体水平得到验证，但动物水平的检测结果表明其相比以往的疫苗的副作用明显较轻。相关结果发表在《Journal of Alzheimer's Disease》以及《Alzheimer's Research & Therapy》杂志上。

阿兹海默症是一种因神经元的损伤而引发的大脑的严重退化的疾病。美国目前已有500万人患有阿兹海默症，而根据疾控中心的说法，该数字到2050年还会有一倍的增长。目前该疾病还没有很好的治疗方法，其中一个潜在的疗法是通过体外生产抗体注入体内以清除淀粉块沉积，但仍处于实验阶段。

Rosenberg的这一最新研究则表明DNA疫苗在阻止淀粉样蛋白的积累方面具有明显的效果。通过向健康的动物体内注射该疫苗，能够引发机体的抗炎反应，并且产生的特异性抗体是此前疫苗的40倍。作者认为FDA在批准进行临床试验之前应该会要求他们重复验证这一研究成果，但他们对此充满信心。
