两份体细胞分别来自35岁以及75岁的成年人（男性）。研究人员分别将两份细胞的DNA提取出来，注入女性捐助者的卵细胞中，从而培育出囊胚。研究者称，来自胚胎的干细胞可用于病人组织、血液以及器官移植的治疗。如果这项研究被其他研究者证实，这将是人类第二次成功地通过克隆的方法将成熟体细胞制备成胚胎干细胞，其重要意义不言而喻。Advanced Cell Technology首席科学家Dr. Robert Lanza称，治疗性的细胞克隆很早就被科学家视为用于治疗病人疾病的利器。

此前，科学家在青蛙、小鼠细胞克隆中获得成功，但是利用人类细胞克隆的实验却很少成功，仅有一例成功的实验是来自Oregon Health & Science University的研究者通过婴儿的干细胞进行克隆的。

自1998年，科学家发现人类胚胎干细胞后，科学家设想其可应用于病人疾病的治疗上，但是自此以后，相关的实验似乎只是空中楼阁，这方面的研究一再遭受挫败，实验进行得相当艰难，人类的胚胎干细胞的制备远比青蛙、小鼠的难度大很多。加上克隆技术又充满争论，从而让这项研究很长时间停滞不前。

2005年，黄禹锡称利用体细胞克隆出胚胎干细胞，后被指出造假，并因此身败名裂；9年后，韩国以及美国其他学者成功地再现了这一实验的真实性。

外界的反应

此项研究一处，我们已经看到在疾病治疗和克隆人方面仅有一步之遥。美国政府部门和学术部门高度关注，他们称“有关克隆理论，不再是书本上的理论了”，要防范该技术用来克隆人。该项研究的研究人员立即出来澄清，称永不会利用它来克隆人，他们会将该技术应用在人类疾病治疗上，“届时会有上百万人会受益。”
