自闭症的原因仍是未知的,因此是遗传学家和神经科学家一个重点的研究课题。Arking和他的同事分析样品中(来源于两种不同的组织库中的样品)的基因表达,将自闭症患者与没有此疾病的对照者的基因表达进行比较。

以前的研究已经确定自闭症患者脑和脊髓中神经元细胞异常。在这项研究中,Arking说:研究小组能够聚焦于小胶质细胞,小胶质细胞是帮助大脑抵抗病原体和其他威胁的特定类型细胞。在自闭症者大脑中,小胶质细胞似乎是永远激活的,小胶质细胞应对炎症反应的基因处于开启状态。

Arking注意到,既然我们已经明确遗传因素对自闭症的贡献,我们认为炎症不太可能是自闭症的根本原因。相反,他说,炎症是上游基因突变的下游结果。下一步将是找出是否治疗炎症可以改善自闭症症状。
