Shahrara和她的同事们发现在身体低氧条件下或缺氧,CCL28蛋白的存在。类风湿关节炎的关节可能变得缺氧,因此研究人员希望看到,是否蛋白及其受体在患者受影响的关节中存在。研究人员测量类风湿关节炎患者和骨关节炎患者组织以及关节液体中蛋白质的水平,这两种类型患者关节中蛋白水平比没有关节病的人显著较高。

研究者发现,CCL28在受类风湿关节炎的关节中过度产生,吸引其表面携带CCL28受体的细胞。当研究人员将CCL28给予携带受体的细胞,细胞会组织成血管。但如果化学阻断该受体,再给予CCL28,血管形成减少。这一发现,Shahrara说:提供了“强有力的证据”表明CCL28结合携带相应受体的细胞是血管生成的必要步骤。
