近日,来自杜克大学的数学家通过研究开发出了一种新方法,该方法可以帮助医生们预测不同类型的癌症如何发展,尤其是当肿瘤的尺寸无法测量时,相关研究发表于国际杂志Bulletin of Mathematical Biology上。

在美国超过三分之一的个体都会在其生命阶段的某个时刻被诊断为癌症,而对肿瘤生长的准确预测是确定放疗及化疗剂量的关键,同时也可以帮助指导患者进行筛查的频率及疗法是否有效的凭证。研究者Richard Durrett教授表示,数学模型可以帮助告知研究者们一整套完整的癌症疗法决策,但前提是我们必须确保模型的准确性,关于肿瘤生长大量的数学模型都已经被提出了,但哪一种模型对于多种不同类型的肿瘤最适合依然是一个问题。

有些肿瘤一旦生长到一定尺寸就会停止生长,而其它肿瘤则会继续生长;这其中部分问题来自于大多数的肿瘤模型都可以利用一系列的肿瘤尺寸测定来进行刻度的标识,这样我们就可以知道氧气和营养物的供给在哪一点上和肿瘤在患者机体的生长不相同,但因为大多数癌症患者在最开始确诊后就使用了诸如手术等疗法,因此类似的肿瘤生长数据就很难获得了。

这项研究报告中,研究人员设计了一种方法来对比肿瘤生长的常见数学模型,其中研究者就对肿瘤的尺寸进行了两个时间点的测量,通常是在患者疗法开始前进行最大数量的尺寸测量;本文研究结果显示,乳腺和肝脏肿瘤呈现指数式地增长,至少当肿瘤非常小的时候,这就好比在银行的定期存款一样,我们只能以固定利率来赚取利息。

本研究中,作者验证了5种模型,分别为power law, exponential, Gompertz, and Spratt's generalized logistic model,最终观察到两种类型的神经肿瘤都会通过三分之二的幂定律来进行生长,这同肿瘤表面的细胞的生长结论是一致的;当前的研究结果显示,本文研究中研究者所提出的数学模型可以有效地帮助确定哪种肿瘤生长模型对于研究不同类型的癌症最为合适。
