携带RFX6突变的个体有很高的罹患糖尿病的可能性:它可以在20岁之前就已经开始,到50岁时,80%的人已经患上了这种疾病。它由父母传递给孩子,可能会影响同一家庭的许多代人。RFX6型糖尿病通常需要胰岛素治疗,因为患者的胰岛素分泌减少了。MiriamCnop博士,ULB糖尿病研究中心和Erasmus医院的教授,在这些患者中发现了一种可以刺激胰岛素分泌的荷尔蒙GIP的减少。

激素GIP是饮食后肠产生的,是胰岛素分泌的重要调节因子。RFX6型糖尿病是与低GIP生产相关的第一种糖尿病。这种新型疾病机制的鉴定表明,GIP类似物(即具有类似GIP结构的药物)可以为RFX6型糖尿病患者提供新的治疗方案。这些新发现强调需要确定特定形式的糖尿病,以便为患者提供个性化治疗。
