来自英国加的夫大学等机构的研究人员在新一期美国期刊《生育与不孕》（Fertility and Sterility）上报告说，精子在使卵子受精的过程中会向卵子注入一种名为PLCz的蛋白质，它会引发受精卵发育所必需的一系列生理反应。有些男性之所以不育，是因为精子中缺少这种蛋白质，导致精子即便与卵子结合，也无法进一步发育成胚胎。

研究人员在实验室中成功制造了具有活性的PLCz蛋白质。实验显示，如果将它注入未受精的卵子中，卵子会出现与正常受精过程中相同的一系列生理反应，这说明如果给存在相应缺陷的精子添加这种蛋白质，就有望大大提高卵子受精的几率。
